Relay for Life Hits Southwest Virginia
Relay for Life is a spring time festivity used to raise much-needed funds for cancer research. Radford, Virginia recently participated in this nation-wide event and Blacksburg, Virginia will participate this Friday on Virginia Tech’s campus. Radford had 584 participants, 46 teams and rose over $32,000! I think this is an amazing accomplishment for such a small city. Originally scheduled to be outdoors at Radford University’s Cupp Stadium, high winds and possible storms moved the event indoors to Radford’s Recreational Center.Â
To highlight a few teams’ accomplishment, Carilion New River Valley Medical Center was the top team, raising $4,166.85, followed by RU Relay Committee, Rotaract of RU, Radford High School, and Children’s Lap. Another honorable mention would be Radford University’s Alpha Phi Omega. Alpha Phi Omega is a national, co-ed community service fraternity with strong ties to the Boy Scouts of America. Alpha Phi Omega raised $1544.53 and obtained 38 team members. Great job to all who participated!
It was an energetic night filled with fun and activities. Different teams showed their spirit by putting up their tents and continuing with the games they would have planned to do outside. One continuous activity was gaining spirit points. Spirit points were given out for various activities ranging from dancing to junk drawer relays. Everyone seemed to have a great time.Â
Overall, the event proved to be a success. Good luck to you, Virginia Tech! We wish you similar success!   Â
