Momentum building for Abingdon in Southwest Virginia

According to a recent article, Abingdon is starting to be considered as the next Asheville.  Now, considering that I don’t travel much, the previous sentence really didn’t mean that much to me.  When I make travel arrangements, they are usually to go to a concert or visit friends in an area; any touristy things to do that happen to be in the area are simply something to do to pass the time until I’ve recovered from the night before.

Turns out, Asheville happens to be in North Carolina and is apparently “another artsy mountain town.”  I remember making my first trip to Abingdon for some business meetings and was surprised to learn that a regional artisan center was going to be built there.  After reading this article, things are starting to make more sense to me.

Being that I’m not a huge arts-and-crafts guy, in case you couldn’t tell yet, the company that intrigued me the most was the cupcake store that specialized in “unique-flavored” cupcakes.  Unique can cover any range of flavor, so I started picturing cupcakes with crazy flavors like those jelly beans that have popcorn flavoring.  But maybe the real reason I keyed in on cupcakes was because I hadn’t had lunch yet.

In any case, there are a slew of arts-and-crafts options available, as well as many more on the way, that are working to draw more attention to Abingdon as a tourist attraction and to help build business.
