Southwest Virginia: The Birthplace of the Internet

Who says Southwest Virginia isn’t the home place of celebrities? You may be surprised to hear that a few of your neighbors in Giles County are big names in the way of the Internet industry. According to the April issue of Valley Business FRONT, Giles resident Bernie Cosell is the man who “turned on” the Internet and Ray Tomlinson is the man who launched e-mail.

The Chateau Morrisette Experience

When I began my senior year at Virginia Tech, I made a to-do list of the things I had yet to do in the Southwest Virginia region. The items on the list ranged from restaurants I hadn’t been to, to recreational areas and hiking trails. This past weekend I accomplished one of the items that I was looking forward to most - visiting the Chateau Morrisette Winery.

Relay for Life Hits Southwest Virginia

Relay for Life is a spring time festivity used to raise much-needed funds for cancer research.  Radford, Virginia recently participated in this nation-wide event and Blacksburg, Virginia will participate this Friday on Virginia Tech’s campus.  Radford had 584 participants, 46 teams and rose over $32,000!  I think this is an amazing accomplishment for such a small city.  Originally scheduled to be outdoors at Radford University’s Cupp Stadium, high winds and possible storms moved the event indoors to Radford’s Recreational Center.

Surfing the New River Valley

For all you travel lovers, there is a new way to get around the New River Valley and beyond: surfing. Now you may be wondering how that is possible in Southwest Virginia, but thanks to a nonprofit started in New Hampshire back in 1999, CouchSurfing.com allows members to “surf” virtually anywhere.

Prepare for Delays in Tax Refunds

Don’t get too anxious for your tax refunds to show up in the mail this tax season. According to an article by The Southwest Times, the 2008 Virginia tax refunds may take much longer than expected to process when filing paper copies. The reason? You guessed it - budget cuts.

Technology Jobs Training Program for GED Candidates

Governor Kaine “announced the launch of ‘PlugGED In,’ an initiative to prepare high school dropouts for entry-level technology jobs while they prepare for the GED tests.”  Specifically, the PlugGED In initiative aims to supplement the standard GED program being operated in Virginia with “project-based instruction in the technology skills critical for entry-level employees.”  In addition to the extra instruction, participants in the program will “have an opportunity to earn Microsoft certifications free of charge …and…have a guaranteed interview with Northrop Grumman.”
