After spending the last five months studying abroad in Sweden, who would have thought I would end up in Blacksburg, VA. With two siblings attending Virginia Tech, I searched for opportunities the town had to offer. I found myself with the incredible opportunities to work as an intern and swim lesson instructor.
Blacksburg has provided a safe and friendly environment for me to spend the summer as a student going into my senior year of college. The area offers numerous activities to engage in. One highlight of my first few days here is Monday Night Blues at The Cellar in downtown Blacksburg. Local artists present their musical talents as an addition to the amusing atmosphere of swing dancing and jovial music that entertains the locals on Monday nights. The downtown area also provides numerous restaurants and shops that would acquire anyone’s tastes.
As well, the outdoor activities of Blacksburg make the town a desirable place to be, especially in the summer time. Over the weekend, I was able to spend the day floating down the river in an inner tube with the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains as the landscape. This served as just one enticing activity that would attract anyone to the numerous activities Blacksburg has to offer. (more…)

This week marks the beginning of The 32nd Annual Highland Summer Conference, held at Radford University. It is a two-week lecture-seminar workshop that combines well-known Appalachian guest-writers with aspiring writers and students. I took the class in 2007 and the instruction I received not only made me a better writer, but opened my mind to so many different thoughts and possibilities. While it is too late to register for the class, it is not too late to take advantage of the true gem of the class—each Tuesday and Thursday of the 2 week class, there are readings and receptions by the visiting authors. These take place from 7:30-9:30 in the McConnell Library on Radford’s campus and all are free and open to the public.
The first week’s readings kick off tonight with Writer and RU professor, Jim Minick. Minick is the author of two books of poetry, Her Secret Song and Burning Heaven. Also he has written a collection of essays, Finding a Clear Path, and edited All There Is to Keep by Rita Riddle. Currently he’s working on a memoir titled The Blueberry Years.

According to The Floyd Press, a benefit concert on Saturday night raised over $12,000, all going towards the Warren G. Lineberry Memorial Park in Floyd, VA. With efforts like this, the town will have no problem with its goal to open the newly designed park by June 20th.
Although this concert was a big step towards building a park, everyone involved in this project agree that more efforts and contributions are necessary into creating Floyd’s own public park. After all, the park is planned to have the works: patios, walkways, picnic areas, and even a small covered amphitheater.

Last night marked the end of a fierce competition; no, I’m not talking about any adrenaline soaked athletic event or epic clash of the titans, but for a change, thousands of Americans tuned in to watch the National Spelling Bee, a rare triumph of brain over brawn.

This coming Saturday, May 23rd from 9am-3pm, Abingdon’s little Plumb Alley will be once again transformed into the Portobello Road of Southwest Virginia for their 26th Annual Plumb Alley Day. The festival, hosted by the Abingdon Kiwanis is rated one of the largest one-day events in the Southeast and is expecting roughly 10,000 visitors.
Not familiar with Abingdon? Don’t know where Plumb Alley is? No problem. Plumb Alley is located directly between what is known as the second longestMain Street in the world and Valley Street. Plumb Alley, just big enough for a car to fit on, is a wonderfully shaded alley running behind the World Famous Barter Theatre. All day, you will be able to visit yard sales (including one massive Kiwani’s sponsored yard sale), have great festival food, listen to music and see dance performances.
Just like a regular yard sale, you never know what you’re going to find, but you are guaranteed to come home with some sort of treasure. On my first trip down Plumb Alley as a child, I walked away with the first Beatles LP for $1.00. See what I mean? Treasures and great deals abound! (more…)

Let me tell you, I hardly ever miss a Trail Days, and this year was no exception. This year was the 23rd Annual Trail Days in Damascus, Virginia. If you’ve never been to Damascus, you need to go!
Trail Days is a wonderful mixture of an outdoor festival and a community yard sale, mixed into a wonderful weekend extravaganza. There are outdoor stores like Adventure Damascus and Sun Dog Outfitters represented there, jewelry makers, potters and a number of other traditional crafters and other vendors. There was a lady who painted T-Shirts with drumsticks and a lady who did hair wraps. There was truly something for everyone at Trail Days.
Damascus, a town of about 900 had what the Bristol Herald Courier said was “tens of thousands” at this past weekend’s celebration. The celebration itself celebrates the Appalachian Trail and its hikers. Damascus is largely considered the “Capital of the Appalachian Trail,” because of its friendly attitude toward the hikers. It has long been known as the friendliest spot on the trail; there is a lot to be said for this title. Many hikers experience the cold shoulder and discrimination while on the trail, so to be able to go to a place like Damascus and feel welcome is a great thing. Many of these hikers make a special trip back to Damascus especially for the Trail Days celebration. Churches have proudly posted on their message boards “Our Church Loves Hikers” and “Hikers Welcome Here.” (more…)

All that you love about Blue Ridge America will be incarnated in the form of a park coming to Southwest Virginia sometime this October. The park will include everything from luxury hotels, live theater and restaurants, to tree-house cabins, Smith Mountain Lake excursions, and the most exciting feature – the world’s longest zipline!
Although not located directly in Southwest Virginia, “Blue Ridge America” will be developed at the site of Explore Park in neighboring Roanoke County. Similar to an amusement park but without the rides, the park is intended to offer families a 2-3 day getaway in the heart of nature. According to The Roanoke Times, the park is planned to be approximately 1,100 acres, and to begin construction no later than June 13, 2010. (more…)

If you’re reading this, you know what a blog is. But do you know the rules for social networking when it comes to trying to land a job? An article in the April issue of Valley Business FRONT spelled out what you need to know about using social media sites in a professional and informative manner.
The article brings up the common cliché, “It’s not what you know, but who you know that will help you succeed.” This is often true in the sense of traditional networking such as at career fairs and luncheons, but social media sites take the idea of networking to a whole new level. Some of the article’s tips include: provide information that is relevant to your job search, update your postings regularly, and express your interest in a company or field.
I love the idea of creating a blog that tracks your job search. In that sense, you could update readers to your status without having to use less professional venues such as Twitter or Facebook. I enjoy using the site LinkedIn, which I personally think is the most professional social networking site, although I have never successfully found a job or been contacted by an employer via their site. The article also suggests simply creating your own personal website that you can provide employers access to your résumé, sample writing pieces or portfolio.

Commemorate Black History Month by celebrating your roots in Appalachia infused with the culture of South Africa in the performance of Step Afrika.
Step Afrika showcases stepping to gumboot to Zulu, with an eclectic style of choreography combining a range of cultures from Appalachia to South Africa. The performance is brought to you by the Virginia Tech Union, and will be performed in Burruss Hall Auditorium on February 24, 2009 at 7:00 p.m.
The Washington Post has described Step Afrika as “always visually and musically exciting” with “electrifying talent!” As ambassadors of cultural awareness, Step Afrika’s motto is “If we can dance together, we can work together.”
As a former ballet dancer, I have always been mesmerized by the fast-paced rhythms and movements produced by step dance. Although ballet takes a lot of discipline, technique and grace, step dancing requires sharp, synchronized choreography executed with passion and precision.
I look forward to attending this performance myself, and encourage anyone in the New River Valley to take part in Virginia Tech’s celebration of Black History Month. For more information, visit the Virginia Tech Calendar of Events.
