Greetings from Return to Roots!

The 2009 Return to Roots Celebration!

2009 Return to Roots Celebration

Two years ago this September, we began an annual celebration of the efforts of so many to facilitate bringing individuals back to Virginia's Great Southwest! via the Return to Roots Program!

We will be celebrating the three-year anniversary of the Virginia Tobacco Commission funded Return to Roots-SWVA Special Project and Governor Tim Kaine's original launch of Return to Roots by hosting the 3rd Annual Return to Roots Fundraising Celebration on Friday, September 18, 2009 in Bristol, Virginia at the Historic Bristol Train Station. We are again hosting the event in partnership with Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion Festival, which is being held that same weekend, beginning the same day.

As you already know, Return to Roots is an exciting program that continues seeks to find those who left Southwest Virginia for other prospects and return them for existing career opportunities. The Return to Roots organization is strengthening our ability to attract and retain quality employees in Southwest Virginia! We have now seen continued visits to The Return to Roots website - www.ReturnToRoots.org by individuals from all 50 states and 92 countries and territories worldwide! Since January 2009, Return to Roots efforts led 9 individuals back to the region earning an estimated $446K in salaries!

Return to Roots continues to be a partially grant funded program and we continue to need to raise funds for several matching grants. As a result, we are continuing a tradition of success by hosting the 3rd Annual Return to Roots Fundraising Celebration to support this program and we need your help sponsorship assistance.

We are looking for patrons and sponsors at numerous levels - from $500 to $50,000. Attached are the Sponsorship Opportunities and I know all will benefit from one of the Return to Roots sponsorship levels. As a business excited about the Southwest Virginia community, this would not only be an investment into Return to Roots, but a demonstration that you and your company believes that Southwest Virginia can build its workforce to become more globally competitive.

Please consider sponsoring Return to Roots at one of the following levels:
" 50K Circle
" 25K Circle
" 10K Circle
" 5K Circle
" 2.5K Circle
" 1K Sponsor
" $500 Patron

Click here to will see what each sponsorship receives in turn for their gift, which is also tax deductible as Virginia Economic Bridge is a registered 501(c)(3).

Your contribution will be used to further the message, market on a wider scope the mission of Return to Roots and to actively seek more registrants who could potentially fill your career opportunities in Southwest Virginia while also generating a dollar for dollar matching towards grant funding. If you are unable to contribute, please consider a contribution to go toward the matching funds already awarded.

I hope that you will consider making the September 18, 2009 event a priority for you, your company or organization. It is a tremendous venue for you to extend your community relations to a broader audience and to take an active role in building Southwest Virginia's overall job pool - a legacy that we can all be proud to call our own.

"JobQuest" Offers Tips and Advice to JobSeekers

The most recent episode of "JobQuest," which aired Aug. 4, offered job hunting advice for people over age 50, web-savvy social networkers, and everyone in between. The show featured a special interview with Carl McDaniels, a retired Virginia Tech professor who is familiar with job search strategies for older workers. The "Blue Ridge PBS Tweety Birds" were also back in the studio using Twitter.com to share the valuable jobhunting information on "JobQuest."

"The ongoing recession is affecting people young and old, so we're trying to provide information that is helpful to job seekers of all ages," said Julie Newman, "JobQuest" executive producer and host. "We're also utilizing a wide variety of communication tools, like the Internet and a toll-free phone number, so we can connect with as many people as possible."

McDaniels, who wrote a careers column in USAToday online for over-50 workers, offered tips for older job seekers. He said, for example, people over 50 often have many more personal and professional contacts than younger job seekers. Such contacts can be extremely helpful when networking for a new job.

Additional "JobQuest" highlights included 60 new job listings from across the region. Susan Geary, the "JobQuest" resume expert, continued her ongoing series with helpful hints for how to effectively complete a job application online or on paper. Human resources experts were once again available at the phone bank to answer questions. "JobQuest" also concluded a two-part series on how to decode common interview questions and develop effective answers.

"JobQuest" continues Tuesday, September 8th at 7 p.m. with another live, information-packed broadcast.

Appalachian Trail: Garden Mountain, Chestnut Ridge, & Brushy Mountain

Location: Bland County, Virginia

This saunter over Chestnut Ridge to Poor Valley and over Lynn Camp and Brushy Mountains offers the kind of remote, wild feeling for which the southern Appalachian Trail is known. Playing Now at The Barter Theatre

"A funny feel-good musical for all ages!" It is February 9, 1964, and four young male singers have landed their first big gig at an airport bar, but on the way to pick up their tuxes, they are slammed broadside by a busload of Catholic teenagers. That's where our story begins, as the boys are given a second chance to fulfill their dreams and perform the concert that never was. Singing in delicious '50s four-part harmony, the boys will serenade you with "Three Coins in the Fountain," "Sixteen Tons," "Chain Gang," "Heart and Soul" and "Love Is a Many Splendored Thing."
